Ms Wendy Mason - General Manager

Wendy joins the WRI team as General Manager from her former position as Head of the Commonwealth Bank Foundation. During her tenure with the Bank, Wendy played a key role in managing the Bank’s relationships with Government, the community and industry. Wendy has worked closely with research organisations such as Monash University and the Australian Centre for Educational Research to develop and evaluate programs to support improved financial literacy in Australia.

Wendy comes to the Western Research Institute with extensive management and business development experience, excellent networks, and a substantial track record in stakeholder relations across the government, financial and not-for-profit sectors; and experience as a major end-user of research to support best practice outcomes.

Bringing with her formal qualifications in education and psychology from the University of Sydney, a Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management and Graduate Certificate in Business (Marketing), Wendy also holds an Australian Institute of Company Director’s Diploma of Business (Governance). Growing up in the central west, she is enthusiastic about the opportunity to return to the region and work with the staff of WRI to support the social, economic and environmental development and sustainability of rural and Indigenous communities in our regions.


Mr Alistair Maclennan - Senior Research Consultant

BA Political Economy, First Class Honours (UNE)

Having served in a variety of parliamentary, public service and private sector roles, Alistair brings a wealth of research experience to WRI. Alistair has well developed skills in data analysis, economics and business, and has a wide understanding of government. In addition, Alistair also has experience in policy development in the energy sector, particularly relating to the retail electricity market for residential customers, where he engaged with industry, government agencies and NGOs to inform policy.

In various positions with the Queensland Parliament, Alistair provided research for Ministers, members of parliament, and assisted parliamentary committees undertake inquiries and engage with the public.

Alistair’s experience in engaging with clients, stakeholders and the public assists WRI to fully understand its client’s needs and provide tailored research.

Alistair is currently furthering his skills, studying accountancy with CPA Australia.


Ms Wai Matthews – Research Consultant

BBus (Fin/Eco) CSU

With a background in Business Administration and Bookkeeping, Wai brings strong experience and knowledge in local business operations, management and finance to WRI. Wai has great interest in economic issues affecting regional areas which led to her securing an internship with the NSW Department of Industry as an Economic Analyst.

As an intern, Wai has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in data analytics and reporting as well as a good understanding of government and related processes. This experience has seen her enhance WRI's research capabilities by providing a high standard of work to specific time frames/deadlines in areas such as Input-Output (IO) modelling, regional profile development for local government and benefit cost analysis work. Wai is looking to further extend and strengthen her skillset with Post Graduate studies in Applied Statistics.


Ms Dale Curran - Executive Officer


Dale is responsible for all administrative processes at WRI including executive support, finance, management of the Board of Directors and maintenance of policies. She has worked in a variety of roles at WRI, including Fieldwork Supervisor and Research Assistant, and has worked on several community and business surveys. Dale’s skills and experience in data collection contribute to WRI’s projects, bringing strong skills in data collection, particularly questionnaire development, data entry and telephone and face to face interviewing techniques. Dale brings a high level of organisational skill to her role as Executive Officer.
